Protective coatings for concrete
Protective coatings are barrier systems applied to prepared substrates to reduce water ingress, chemical attack, abrasion, and corrosion exposure. Systems may include primers, intermediate coats, and topcoats per manufacturer data and project specifications.
Coatings are not a substitute for sound substrate or adequate preparation. Deteriorated concrete, active leaks, and contamination typically require repair, leak control, and surface preparation before coating application.
JWI applies specified coating systems as field contracting work, following manufacturer instructions, SDS requirements, and quality control steps where applicable.

When This System May Be Appropriate
Protective coatings may be appropriate when substrate is sound or has been repaired, surface preparation is achievable, and a compatible system is specified for the exposure. Other steps may be required first:
- Cementitious repair for spalls and profile correction
- Leak control at cracks and joints before coating
- Surface preparation: cleaning, profiling, and contamination removal
- Linings instead of or in addition to coatings where immersion severity requires
- Engineer or owner specification of system type and DFT requirements

- Substrate soundness and moisture content at time of application
- Surface preparation quality: primary performance factor
- Active water and leaks must be addressed before coating
- Chemical compatibility with effluent or process chemistry
- Application temperature, humidity, and ventilation

- DFT, recoat windows, and holiday detection per specifications
- Movement at cracks: may need treatment before rigid coatings
- Manufacturer training and product approval requirements where applicable
- Engineer specifications and owner QA requirements
