
Hydrophobic Polyurethane Grouts for Active Leak Control
Hydrophobic polyurethane grout reacts in the presence of water and generally repels water after reaction. Depending on the product and conditions, it may expand into cracks, joints, voids, or soil-adjacent pathways to help stop or reduce active water movement. JWI may use these materials where appropriate on commercial and infrastructure leak remediation scopes.

Hydrophobic polyurethane grout
Hydrophobic polyurethane grout is a water-reactive injection material typically selected where water movement is present or expected along a leakage path. When the grout contacts water, it reacts and expands, forming a firm, water-resistant mass that generally does not re-absorb water after cure.
These materials are commonly used in injection grouting, not as surface coatings. Placement depends on port layout, crack or joint geometry, void size, and whether water is actively moving through the path at the time of injection.
JWI does not manufacture these materials. Product selection, mixing, and placement follow manufacturer instructions and project specifications where applicable.

What Problems It Helps Address

- Recurring leaks at penetrations where flexible surface sealants have failed
- Infiltration in utility structures during or after rain events
When This System May Be Appropriate
Hydrophobic polyurethane grout may be appropriate when water is present or actively moving along the injection path and a firm, water-resistant reaction product is needed. Another material may be more appropriate when:
- The crack or joint requires flexibility rather than a rigid expanded mass. Hydrophilic polyurethane may be considered.
- The concrete is sound and non-moving and rigid bonding is specified. Epoxy injection may be directed where applicable.
- Substrate is deteriorated and requires rebuild before injection. Cementitious repair may precede grout work.
- Water chemistry, temperature, or confined-space conditions limit polyurethane reaction. Product data should be reviewed.
- Engineer specifications call for a different grout family or permeation approach
Limitations & Selection Factors
- Substrate condition: deteriorated or unsound concrete may need repair before injection can be effective
- Active water: flow rate and water source affect reaction time, expansion, and travel through the path
- Movement: ongoing structural movement may stress a rigid hydrophobic mass. Joint behavior should be evaluated.
- Crack behavior: hairline or wide, open cracks may need different port spacing or pretreatment
- Water chemistry: certain effluents or groundwater chemistry may affect product performance
- Access: injection ports require reachable crack, joint, or void geometry
- Cure time: return-to-service depends on product, temperature, and exposure
- Service environment: immersion, chemical exposure, or UV may require a compatible protective system over the repair zone
- Product compatibility: adjacent sealants, coatings, or prior repairs may affect adhesion and travel
- Manufacturer instructions and engineer specifications where applicable
